You don't need a real mic

Most people recording samples for VibeSing are using a phone. That's fine — phone mics are genuinely good now, and the model cares far more about consistency and a clear signal than about studio-grade gear. What actually moves the needle isn't the hardware, it's how you use it: distance, angle, and steadiness.

Distance: the setting most people get wrong

The instinct is to get close to the mic, like a podcast host. For a training sample, that's usually a mistake. Too close and you get proximity effect — a boost in bass frequencies that makes your voice sound artificially thick and boomy, which isn't actually how you sound. It also amplifies breath noise and mouth clicks.

A good starting distance for a phone mic is roughly 8-12 inches (about a hand-span-and-a-half) from your mouth. Say a few test phrases and check the recording: if it sounds boomy or thumpy, back off an inch or two. If it sounds thin and distant, move slightly closer. You're aiming for a natural, present tone — close enough to sound clear, far enough not to sound artificially heavy.

Angle: aim off-axis, not straight-on

Talking directly into a mic capsule aims every burst of air from consonants like "p," "b," and "t" straight at the sensor — that's what causes plosive pops. A simple fix that costs nothing: angle the mic (or your mouth) slightly off to the side, maybe 20-30 degrees, instead of speaking directly into it. You still get a clear, close signal, but the direct blast of air passes beside the capsule instead of into it.

If you're using your phone, this often just means holding it slightly off to the side of your mouth rather than directly in front of your lips — small adjustment, noticeably fewer pops.

Stability matters more than positioning perfection

A phone held in your hand drifts as you talk, which means your distance and angle change mid-sample without you noticing — and a model trained on samples with wildly inconsistent proximity effect has a harder time learning a stable tone. Prop the phone against something (a stack of books, a mug, a phone stand if you have one) rather than holding it freehand. Consistency across your samples matters more than nailing the theoretically perfect distance on any single take.

Cheap plosive control

A pop filter is nice but not required. A few free or near-free substitutes:

  • A hand held loosely a few inches in front of the mic, angled to deflect air without blocking sound — an old trick that genuinely works.
  • A stretched-out sock or thin cloth over the mic if you're using an external one.
  • The off-axis angle above, which alone solves most plosive problems without any extra material.

One environment, every sample

Whatever distance and angle you settle on, keep it identical across every sample you record for one voice model. A model that hears a slightly boomy sample followed by a slightly thin one followed by an even-toned one has effectively been given three different microphone characters to reconcile into one voice. Pick your setup once, mark where you're standing or propping the phone if you need to, and repeat it exactly for every sample in that batch.

Open the studio and record a quick test phrase first — listen back before you commit to a full set of samples, since a two-second check now saves you re-recording everything later.
